The fight to save Soho Parish C of E primary school, the last remaining school in London's Soho district, highlights a growing education crisis as falling pupil numbers threaten hundreds of primary schools across England. Sandwiched between a strip club, a West End theatre, and a pub, this unique school has thrived for decades but now faces an uncertain future due to post-Covid downturn and demographic shifts.
The Struggle to Keep Soho's Last Primary School Open
Parents waiting to collect their children on Great Windmill Street expressed deep concern about the school's fate, with many saying they were left in the dark by Westminster council. One parent noted, "Without this school it's all just tourists, isn't it?" The school received a temporary reprieve last month when plans to amalgamate with another Church of England school nearly a mile away were dropped, but the future remains uncertain.

Falling Pupil Numbers: A National Crisis
Forecasts predict that hundreds of primary schools across England could close due to declining birth rates and changing demographics. In Soho, an area that once had 16 schools, only Soho Parish remains. The school's challenges reflect broader trends in urban education, where families are increasingly priced out of city centers.
| Factor | Impact on Soho Parish |
|---|---|
| Post-Covid downturn | Reduced enrollment and funding |
| Falling pupil numbers | Threat of closure or merger |
| Demographic shift | Fewer families with children in the area |
| Lack of affordable housing | Families moving to suburbs |
What Parents and Teachers Are Saying
Parents praised the school for making good use of nearby museums and theatres, providing a rich educational experience. However, many worry that uncertainty will drive teachers away. One couple, whose son started in nursery class, said they were now thinking about moving to find affordable childcare. A school spokesperson stated, "Soho Parish C of E primary school is a unique school – but the challenges we face are significant."

How This Affects Families and Communities
The potential loss of Soho Parish would not only impact students but also the community's character. Parents describe the school as a hub of "normal family life" in an area dominated by tourism and nightlife. Without it, Soho risks becoming a transient zone rather than a livable neighborhood.
