The fight to save Soho's last primary school, Soho Parish C of E primary, highlights a growing education crisis in inner London. Sandwiched between a strip club, a West End theatre, and a pub, this school has thrived for decades but now faces closure due to falling pupil numbers and post-Covid challenges. Parents worry that without this school, the area will lose its last remnant of normal family life, replaced entirely by tourists and transient visitors.
The Struggle to Keep Soho Parish Open
Westminster council is currently working on a consultant's report about the future of schools in the borough, and many parents fear the worst. The school received a temporary reprieve last month when plans to amalgamate with another Church of England school nearly a mile away were scrapped. However, uncertainty remains high, with teachers potentially leaving and families considering relocation to find affordable childcare. The school's closure would mark the end of an era in an area that once had 16 schools.

Why Pupil Numbers Are Falling
Post-Covid trends and demographic shifts are driving the decline. Many families have moved out of central London due to high costs and limited housing, while the remaining population consists largely of older residents and single people. The school's spokesperson noted: "Soho Parish C of E primary school is a unique school – but the challenges we face are not unique." Falling birth rates and changing urban living patterns are affecting schools across England, with hundreds of primary schools predicted to close.
Impact on Families and Community
Parents collecting their children on Great Windmill Street expressed deep concern. One parent said: "Without this school, it's all just tourists." The school makes good use of nearby museums and theatres, offering a rich educational experience. However, the lack of affordable childcare and family-friendly housing is pushing families away. A couple with a son in nursery class said they were now thinking about moving to find stability for their child.
