Super El Niño conditions are intensifying in 2024, causing a delayed monsoon in India and leaving farmers like Kasturi Gamango and Pramila Sabar in Odisha facing severe crop losses. As the Raja festival passed without rain, agricultural communities are bracing for a challenging season.
Understanding Super El Niño and Its Impact on India's Monsoon
El Niño is a natural climate pattern marked by warming of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. A "super" El Niño occurs when sea surface temperatures exceed 2°C above average. For India, this typically means a weaker monsoon, delayed rainfall, and uneven distribution.

According to the India Meteorological Department, June 2024 ended with a 40% shortfall in rainfall. This has already led to dry spells and water stress across several states, especially Odisha, which has faced at least 19 droughts in the past 50 years.
How Farmers Are Coping with Delayed Monsoon
In Laxmipur, farmers sowed paddy seeds in late June, hoping for rain by germination. Mangala Sabar, 45, recalls the 2023-24 El Niño years when transplanting failed twice, losing entire crops. Many families have taken high-interest loans to survive.
The situation demands urgent adaptation strategies, including drought-resistant crop varieties and better irrigation infrastructure.
Data Table: El Niño Years vs. Monsoon Performance
| Year | El Niño Strength | Monsoon Rainfall (June-Sept) | Agricultural Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Moderate | 94% of normal | Crop failure in several regions |
| 2024 | Super | 60% of normal (June) | Severe drought risk |
| 2015 | Strong | 86% of normal | Widespread drought |
Key Takeaways for Farmers and Policymakers
- Super El Niño increases the likelihood of weak monsoon and agricultural drought.
- Early warning systems and climate-resilient farming practices are critical.
- Financial support and crop insurance are essential to mitigate losses.
- Water conservation and efficient irrigation can reduce vulnerability.
FAQ: Super El Niño and Indian Agriculture
What is a super El Niño?
A super El Niño is an extreme phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) with unusually high sea surface temperatures, often leading to severe weather disruptions globally, including weaker monsoons in India.
How does El Niño affect India's monsoon?
El Niño typically suppresses monsoon rainfall, causing delays, reduced precipitation, and uneven distribution, leading to droughts and water scarcity.
What can farmers do to adapt to El Niño?
Farmers can adopt drought-resistant crop varieties, improve water management, practice intercropping, and use weather-based advisories to time sowing and irrigation.
