Todd Blanche Sworn In as US Attorney General: What It Means 2026

Todd Blanche has been sworn in as US attorney general, marking a significant shift in the Department of Justice under the Trump administration. This confirmation places Trump's former personal lawyer at the helm of the nation's top law enforcement agency, sparking debates about presidential power, prosecutorial independence, and the future of high-profile investigations.

Who Is Todd Blanche?

Todd Blanche, 52, is a former federal prosecutor who gained national attention as Donald Trump's personal criminal defense attorney. He represented Trump in the New York hush-money case and other criminal matters, earning a reputation as a fierce legal advocate. In early 2025, he joined the administration as deputy attorney general before being elevated to acting attorney general in April.

His confirmation as attorney general was narrowly approved by the Senate with a 50-49 vote, with every Democrat and Republican Senator Susan Collins opposing his nomination. The closed-door ceremony at the White House on Monday cemented his role, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt praising him as "a great lawyer and an even better man."

Key Controversies and Challenges

Since taking over as acting attorney general, Blanche has overseen the departure of more than 200 prosecutors and agents who worked on Trump-related investigations. This mass exodus has raised concerns about the politicization of the DOJ and the loss of institutional expertise.

Blanche has also pushed expansive theories of presidential power, leading to a series of courtroom setbacks. In one notable ruling, a federal judge referred findings to bar authorities for potential disciplinary action against him. Additionally, the botched handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files continues to shadow the department, with lawmakers demanding full transparency and Democrats accusing Blanche of stonewalling survivors and Congress.

What This Means for the DOJ and the Public

Blanche's confirmation signals a continued alignment of the Department of Justice with the president's agenda. Critics argue that his close ties to Trump undermine the DOJ's independence, while supporters see him as a loyalist who will implement the president's vision. The departure of experienced prosecutors could slow down ongoing investigations and affect the department's ability to handle complex cases.

For the public, this change may impact how justice is administered, particularly in politically sensitive matters. The Epstein files controversy remains unresolved, and Blanche's approach to transparency will be closely watched. The Senate's narrow vote reflects deep partisan divisions over his appointment.
