UK mosque attacks are occurring at a rate of one every five days, according to new data from the British Muslim Trust. This alarming trend highlights a 19% rise in anti-Muslim hate crime across England and Wales, with London, Greater Manchester, and the West Midlands as primary hotspots.
Understanding the Scale of Mosque Attacks
The British Muslim Trust recorded over 70 attacks on mosques in the past year, including intimidation, vandalism, online abuse, and violence. One mosque in Birmingham suffered three separate assaults. Akeela Ahmed, CEO of the trust, warns that momentum on attacks is building and calls for urgent government action.

Government Response: Protective Security Funding
In early 2025, the government announced £40 million for mosque security measures such as CCTV, alarms, fencing, and personnel. However, the British Muslim Trust criticizes the application process as overly burdensome. Mosques must provide strong evidence of risk to qualify, creating a barrier to support.
How Mosques Can Apply for Security Funding
- Document any past hate incidents or threats.
- Assess vulnerability based on local hate crime trends.
- Apply through the Home Office’s protective security scheme.
- Consider hiring security personnel if funding is approved.
Impact on Communities
The rise in attacks creates fear and disrupts worship. Ahmed urges ministers to simplify the application process. Community solidarity and reporting are essential to combat hate crime.
