The UK government is moving to ban unlicensed casinos from sponsoring sports teams, a shift that could reshape Premier League football and Formula One by 2027. This proposed ban targets companies without a Gambling Commission license, aiming to protect vulnerable individuals and curb money laundering risks linked to organized crime.
What the Ban on Unlicensed Casino Sponsorship Means
Under current rules, sports teams can accept sponsorship from gambling firms without a UK license as long as those firms don't accept bets from British consumers. However, the government now warns that fans are accessing unlicensed sites through VPNs after seeing ads tied to football. The new proposal would make such commercial deals a criminal offense, with a ban taking effect as early as August 2027 or no later than August 2028.

Impact on Premier League Clubs and Sports
Everton FC faces a major financial hit from its sleeve sponsorship deal with Stake.com, a crypto casino without a UK license. Signed in June for at least £10 million over three years, the agreement now risks being voided mid-term, costing the club at least one year of revenue. Other sports like Formula One could also see sponsorship revenue decline as teams scramble to find compliant partners.
| Sponsorship Type | Current Status | Post-Ban Impact (2027-2028) |
|---|---|---|
| Kit logos | Allowed for unlicensed firms | Criminal offense |
| Stadium infrastructure | Permitted | Prohibited |
| Pitch-side hoardings | Common | Banned |
Why the Government Is Taking Action
Gambling minister Fiona Twycross stated that while most sports remain unaffected, some clubs will face challenges. The eight-week consultation seeks feedback on protecting vulnerable people and preventing sport from being exploited by organized crime for money laundering. The ban also targets unlicensed sites that bypass UK regulations via digital workarounds.

- Unlicensed casino sponsorships will become illegal from 2027-2028.
