The US government's latest allegations that Cuba poses a unique threat to American homeland security clash sharply with the reality of hunger and blackouts gripping the island. The unsigned report, titled Cuba: Capital of 21st-Century Communism, blames Havana for everything from the George Floyd riots to antifa, but Cubans are struggling to find food and endure 24-hour power outages under a six-month-long oil blockade.
The Oil Blockade and Its Devastating Effects
Since the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January, the US has intensified its maximum-pressure campaign against Cuba. The oil blockade has brought the island to a standstill, cutting off fuel for transportation, electricity, and food production. Cubans now search through piles of uncollected rubbish for edible scraps, while homes and hospitals swelter in extended blackouts.

Contrasting US Allegations with On-the-Ground Reality
The State Department report claims Cuba launched armed expeditions against neighboring countries after 1959 and has waged a revolution against Western civilization. However, many Cubans dismiss these as propaganda. “Fidel would have been quite proud of this,” one local commented skeptically. The report fails to mention the humanitarian crisis caused by the embargo.
| Aspect | US Claims | Reality in Cuba |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | Cuba is a security threat | 24-hour blackouts cripple daily life |
| Food | Revolution against the West | People scrounge rubbish for food |
| Political impact | Cuba destabilizes US politics | Isolated economy, no resources for subversion |
