The World Cup sales boost for UK pubs reached an impressive £150 million, driven by late openings and England's progress to the semi-finals. Pubs poured an extra 30 million pints during the tournament, according to the British Beer & Pubs Association (BBPA). This record performance outpaced even the Euro 2024 uplift, highlighting the power of major football events.
Why This World Cup Delivered Record Pub Sales
Several factors contributed to the exceptional performance. Extended trading hours allowed pubs to open through the night for early kick-offs, like England vs. Mexico, where sales nearly doubled compared to pre-tournament periods. Payment data from Epos Now showed a 66% transaction increase for three other games.

In contrast, during Qatar 2022 and Euro 2024, only two games each achieved a 50% sales boost. The expanded tournament format and fan enthusiasm created a perfect storm for the hospitality sector.

Payments provider Dojo reported overall tournament sales were 16% higher than normal, with a World Cup boost 9% better than Euro 2024.
Government Support and Industry Challenges
Following the surge, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham announced a £100M aid package including a 20% cut in business rates for pubs. While welcomed, critics called it insufficient given the industry loses one pub per day in England and Wales.
Dawn Slater, owner of the Garrick’s Head in Greater Manchester, said sales more than doubled after expanding outdoor capacity. “Weekday games were amazing,” she noted, reflecting how the tournament created sustained footfall.
Key Takeaways for the Hospitality Industry
- Extended hours and flexible licensing are crucial for capitalizing on major events.
- Outdoor seating expansions can significantly boost capacity and revenue.
- Government relief measures, though helpful, need greater ambition to stem pub closures.
