Volodymyr Zelenskyy is under growing pressure to reinstate his sacked defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov after campaigners launched indefinite nationwide protests. The political turmoil threatens to destabilize Ukraine's war effort as Russia continues its aggression.
Why Zelenskyy Fired the Defence Minister
On Tuesday, Zelenskyy bowed to public demands by firing Ukraine's commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and appointing Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new head of the armed forces. However, the reshuffle also included the sacking of defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a popular figure known for his ambitious modernization plans. Zelenskyy attempted to defuse anger by offering Fedorov a new role as deputy prime minister for technological development, but Fedorov reportedly turned it down, insisting on being reinstated as defence minister.

Protesters Demand Fedorov's Return
Protesters led by prominent veteran Dmytro Koziatynsky have called for a rally outside Zelenskyy's office in Ivana Franka Square, Kyiv, on Friday evening. Koziatynsky wrote on social media: “We should not forget about the second demand of the protest – to return Mykhailo Fedorov to the position of minister of defence.” He added: “We must do everything possible to ensure that the government hears and satisfies all the demands of society.” The protests show no signs of abating, suggesting Ukraine's political crisis will roll into a second week.
Key Developments in the Crisis
- Fedorov's Rejection: Turned down deputy prime minister post, demands defence ministry.
- Acting Minister: Zelenskyy appointed special forces commander Yevhenii Khmara as acting defence minister.
- Ongoing Protests: Indefinite rallies planned in Kyiv and other cities.
- Military Impact: Unmanned systems forces have conducted strikes on Russian territory, but political stability is crucial.
Comparison: Fedorov vs. Khmara
| Criteria | Mykhailo Fedorov | Yevhenii Khmara |
|---|---|---|
| Experience | Former defence minister, architect of modernization | Special forces commander, operational focus |
| Popular Support | High among protesters and veterans | Limited public recognition |
| Reform Agenda | Ambitious modernisation plan | Continuity of current military leadership |
| Political Leverage | Strong – backed by protests | Appointed unilaterally by Zelenskyy |
The table highlights the stark contrast between Fedorov's reformist vision and Khmara's more conservative military background. Analysts say Fedorov's return could restore confidence, but it would humiliate Zelenskyy.
What the Crisis Means for Ukraine
One senior army source told the Guardian that Zelenskyy faces a major dilemma: “If he reverses his decision, this would be a big victory for Fedorov. It would be humiliating for the president and reveal him to be weak. But if he doesn’t, the protests will keep going.” The crisis comes as Ukraine's unmanned systems forces have carried out a series of long- and mid-range strikes on Russian territory, as well as on occupied southern Ukraine and Crimea. The political instability could undermine these military successes.

FAQ
Why did Zelenskyy sack the defence minister?
Zelenskyy sacked defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov as part of a broader military reshuffle that also replaced the commander-in-chief. The move was intended to address public anger over the war's conduct, but backfired when Fedorov refused a different post.
Will Zelenskyy reinstate Fedorov?
It is uncertain. Reinstating Fedorov would be seen as a victory for the protesters and a sign of weakness for Zelenskyy, but refusing could prolong the political crisis. The president is reportedly weighing his options.
How are the protests affecting Ukraine's war effort?
The protests divert attention from the front lines and create uncertainty in the defence ministry. However, Ukraine's military operations, including drone strikes on Russian territory, have continued despite the political turmoil.
As the crisis unfolds, all eyes are on Zelenskyy's next move. The outcome could reshape Ukraine's wartime leadership and test the resilience of its democracy under fire.
