Beluga Whales Leave Canadian Marine Park: Arrive at US Aquariums 2026

Six beluga whales have finally left the embattled Canadian marine park Marineland in Niagara Falls and are arriving at US aquariums this week, marking a significant but contentious chapter in their captivity saga. The whales' relocation follows a long-standing controversy over animal welfare at the park, which previously threatened to euthanize its beluga population if federal support was not provided.

The Journey of Six Beluga Whales

The six belugas will be rehomed to a consortium of US aquariums in Georgia, Chicago, San Diego, and San Antonio, along with the Oceanogràfic in Spain. While advocates express relief that the whales have left Marineland, they caution that life in US facilities, though under stricter oversight, may still pose challenges. Phil Demers, a former trainer turned critic, said, "There’s obviously some relief, but it’s hard for me to frankly endorse any of the facilities that these animals are going to."

Controversies at Marineland

Marineland operated from the early 1960s until effectively closing to visitors in 2024. The park once held one of the largest captive whale populations in the world but faced numerous reports of poor conditions. According to documents compiled by the Canadian Press, twenty whales—19 belugas and one orca—have died at the park since 2019. Declining visitors, negative press, and a 2019 federal law banning the sale, captivity, and breeding of dolphins and whales contributed to the park's decline. Tensions escalated when the Canadian government blocked Marineland's attempt to transfer whales to a theme park in China, citing concerns over treatment. In October 2025, Marineland threatened to euthanize its 30 belugas unless the government provided financial support. Last month, a deal was reached to rehome the whales.

FAQ

The relocation of these beluga whales signals the end of an era for Marineland but opens a new chapter in the ongoing debate over marine mammal captivity. While the whales have escaped the worst conditions, their future in US aquariums will be closely watched by activists and the public alike.
