Four Men in Their 20s Die in Merseyside Car Crash – Investigation 2026

A devastating car crash in Merseyside has claimed the lives of four men in their 20s. The incident occurred early Friday morning when a black Seat Cupra left the road and collided with a lamp-post in Huyton. Police are appealing for witnesses as they investigate the cause of this tragic event.

The Incident

Officers were called just before 2 a.m. to reports of a single-vehicle collision on Liverpool Road, Huyton. The car was traveling from Liverpool toward Knowsley when it struck the lamp-post. Emergency services arrived rapidly, but four men – aged 23, 23, 24, and 26 – were pronounced dead at the scene. A fifth occupant, a 27-year-old man, was taken to hospital and remains in stable condition.

The force has closed eleven roads in the area for investigation, and a temporary flight-restriction zone (affecting drones) has been placed above Liverpool Road. These closures are expected to remain in place over the weekend.

Witness Accounts

Local residents described the horror of the crash. One woman told the Liverpool Echo she was woken up by an enormous bang. Her daughter, still awake, said, 'The bang was so loud, I thought a lorry had overturned … I looked outside and there was smoke everywhere.' The mother added, 'Police told everyone to stay back. Debris is everywhere. It’s really terrifying.' Another resident reported a strong smell of petrol lingering in the area afterward. These witness accounts underscore the violent nature of the impact.

Police Investigation and Appeal

Superintendent Paul Holden described the incident as a 'truly devastating moment' and stated, 'It is our priority to get answers for the families.' Merseyside Police are urging anyone who saw the black Seat Cupra or has doorbell, dashcam, or CCTV footage to come forward. Even minor details could be critical to understanding how the collision occurred.

The police are particularly interested in the moments just before the crash. They ask drivers who were in the area between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. to review their recordings. This appeal is central to the investigation.

While the cause of this specific crash remains unknown, these common contributing factors highlight the importance of vigilance behind the wheel.
