Athens Suitcase Death: Suspect Admits Hiding Body, Denies Murder 2026

The Athens suitcase death case has taken a dramatic turn as the 26-year-old Afghan suspect, Sharif Ahmadzai, admits to hiding the body of Scottish charity worker Elisabeth-Jane Ross but denies murder. Greek authorities are intensively investigating the motive behind the killing, focusing on the victim's final hours.

Suspect's Confession and Denial

During three days of questioning, Ahmadzai confessed to carrying Ross's body to an abandoned building and placing it in a suitcase. He also admitted to withdrawing €10,000 from ATMs using her credit cards. However, he firmly denies any role in the murder itself, claiming he discovered her lifeless body in an apartment he managed in the Exarchia district.

Police have CCTV footage of Ahmadzai transporting the body on the night of July 16. They believe his denial is inconsistent with the evidence, and he is expected to be formally charged with intentional homicide on Wednesday.

Background of the Victim and Suspect

Elisabeth-Jane Ross, 38, was a Scottish charity worker who had recently arrived in Athens from Edinburgh. She moved into the apartment on July 10 after staying with Greek friends. The suspect, a professional boxer and former child refugee, had keys to the flat where his refugee solidarity group, Love Every Nation, regularly met. He married US citizen Alaina Hall in 2023, and Ross was a friend of Hall's with similar volunteer experience.

Investigation Focus: Motive and Last Hours

Greek authorities are now concentrating on Ross's final hours to uncover why she was targeted. George Kalliakmanis, honorary president of the Athens police officers' association, stated that the homicide division is determined to find the motive behind the murder. The suspect's background, including his arrival in Greece as a child refugee during Europe's migration crisis, is also under scrutiny.
