When a dog saved Houssein Hamze from a bomb during the 2006 war, he vowed to repay that life-saving act. Twenty years later, amid renewed conflict, he remains the sole caregiver for hundreds of animals in southern Lebanon.
The Dog That Predicted a Bomb
In 2006, Houssein Hamze woke to frantic barking from his first rescue pet. Moments later, a bomb struck his home, and shrapnel landed exactly where he had been sleeping. “I swear to God, he really saved me from death. Animals always possess a sixth sense we don’t have,” Hamze recalls. That experience led him to found the Mashala shelter in Zefta, a village in southern Lebanon.

Running Mashala Shelter in Wartime
Today, the donation-supported farm hosts about 200 dogs, horses, camels, chickens, geese, and ravens. Hamze is one of roughly 20 people who stayed behind during the latest Hezbollah-Israel war that started on 2 March 2026. He treks daily to feed and care for his animals, often risking his own safety.

| Camels | 2 | Jamoola and her calf Jamool – very affectionate |
