England rugby players may walk off the pitch in Argentina if racist abuse is repeated, according to captain Jamie George. The threat follows a disturbing incident last July when black squad members were targeted with racial slurs during a Test match in San Juan. George confirmed that the team has discussed contingency plans, including leaving the field, to ensure a unified response against racism.
Background of the Incident
During the second Test against Argentina in 2024, England replacement prop forward Asher Opoku-Fordjour and Chandler Cunningham-South were subjected to racist slurs from a group of home supporters. The abuse occurred during the warm-up and the first half of the match. World Rugby confirmed that England filed a complaint, but the individual perpetrators could not be identified after an investigation.

This time, England is prepared to take a stronger stance. George emphasized that there is no place for racism in the sport, and the team has discussed potential walk-off scenarios if such abuse occurs again. The Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) has assured England that they have taken measures to prevent a repeat, but the team has a plan B ready.
Team Unity and Leadership
Jamie George, who is white, has been consulting with his black teammates to ensure a collective decision. “I’m a white player and I’ve never had to experience anything like that,” George said. “This isn’t just my call to make. The abuse wasn’t aimed at me, but it’s my responsibility to make the best decision.” The squad includes black players like Opoku-Fordjour, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, Noah Caluori, and the uncapped Immanuel Iyogun.
Potential Walk-Off Plan
England’s captain stated that any further incidents would prompt “the strongest of reactions.” The team has discussed walking off the pitch if necessary, a dramatic move that would send a powerful message against racism in rugby.
