Haiti gangs are forcing children into a life of brutality, as seen in the harrowing story of Davensky, a 14-year-old orphan kidnapped and coerced into killing. This alarming trend highlights a deepening humanitarian crisis in the country.
The Rise of Child Recruitment in Haiti
Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, armed gangs have captured large swathes of Haitian territory. The UN warns of an alarming increase in child recruitment, with children now making up half of all gang members. Gangs exploit hunger, displacement, and fear to lure or force children into their ranks.

How Children Are Coerced
Recruitment often begins with coercion. Children like Davensky are kidnapped from school or home, given a gun, and forced to commit violent acts. They face a simple choice: obey or die. Gangs also use social media to glorify combat and attract vulnerable youth.
| Recruitment Method | Description |
|---|---|
| Kidnapping | Children are abducted from schools or streets |
| Coercion | Threats of death or harm to family |
| Exploitation of poverty | Offering food or money in exchange for loyalty |
Impact on Haitian Society
The violence has closed thousands of schools and displaced entire communities. Children are used as fighters, spies, and even executioners. Thousands of gang members have been killed, and children fill the vacuum left by slain fighters, perpetuating a cycle of brutality.
Key Takeaways
