Jermain Defoe's shock exit from National League side Woking came after the club raised growing concerns about his conduct, including missed training sessions and unfulfilled reporting requests. The former Tottenham striker's contract was mutually terminated after just four months in his first managerial role.
Background of Defoe's Woking Tenure
Defoe, 43, took over as manager in late 2024, overseeing two wins and one defeat in six matches. He described the experience as an "eye-opening" opportunity but later stated it was "impossible for me to continue". The club, however, offered a starkly different account.

Club's Official Statement
Director of football Jody Brown said on Saturday: "The recommendation to appoint Jermain as manager was mine, and I take full responsibility. However, in recent weeks there had been feedback from across the club regarding growing concerns." Brown revealed that Defoe and assistant Paul Bracewell were repeatedly asked for a squad depth report and recruitment targets, but the report was never received despite multiple requests.
Furthermore, a scheduled meeting to review season preparations was ignored by both Defoe and Bracewell, who also missed that day's training session. Brown noted that Defoe had never communicated any serious concerns directly to him, leaving the club to speculate on his reasons.
