Boxer Jon McConnell turned down the 13th season of Love Island to chase Commonwealth Games glory, and now he is just one win away from a medal. The Northern Irishman defeated India’s Sumit Sumit 4-1 in the men’s 70kg quarter-finals in Glasgow, coming from behind after two rounds down. “I didn’t expect the attention at all,” McConnell said. “But boxing comes first. Skills pay the bills.”
From Reality TV Rejection to Boxing Stardom
McConnell, 23, made headlines before these Commonwealth Games for rejecting an offer to appear on Love Island. He admits the media frenzy caught him off guard. “Someone sent me the interview about Love Island auditions and I was a wee bit shocked. I didn’t even know I said half of it,” he explained. Despite the distractions, McConnell stayed focused on his sport, training rigorously after arriving in Glasgow on Tuesday.

The long wait to fight tested his patience. “Every day felt the same: wake up, training, rest. It was getting monotonous. This here is what I live for,” he said.
Road to the Quarter-Finals
In his opener, McConnell faced a tough opponent in Sumit Sumit. Down early on the scorecards, he rallied with a strong finish to secure a 4-1 victory, even after having a point deducted. “I came from behind; from two rounds down basically. I am proud of myself,” he added.
Meanwhile, Namibia’s Tryagain Morning Ndevelo also advanced to the quarter-finals in the men’s 60kg division. Named after a lesson from his mother, Ndevelo earned a unanimous points win over Bangladesh’s Md Ruhin Reza after receiving a walkover in the previous round when his opponent failed to show.
