The Nimrods review highlights how this amiable punk road movie, inspired by Green Day's early years, delivers teenage kicks with heart and humor. Directed by Lee Kirk, the film follows three 17-year-old friends who embark on a cross-country journey to open for their idols, blending coming-of-age charm with pop-punk energy.
Green Day's Influence on Nimrods
Green Day's own youthful escapades—driving around in a van, broke and hungry—serve as the foundation for this story. The band's music dominates the soundtrack, providing a bouncy backdrop that mirrors the film's upbeat tone. While the soundtrack is somewhat one-note, it effectively captures the spirit of adolescent rebellion and dream-chasing.

Plot Overview: A Road Trip to Remember
Tommy, Fred, and Chad are garage-band musicians who get pranked into believing Green Day wants them to open at the Hollywood Palladium. With only days to spare, they hit the road from Kansas City to LA, encountering oddballs, supportive adults, and a battle of the bands contest. The journey teaches them about friendship and following their dreams, even when the odds are stacked against them.
Performances and Chemistry
The young leads—Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust—bring genuine likability to their roles. Their chemistry makes the film enjoyable, even when the script leans on familiar teen-comedy tropes. Adult cameos from Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, and Jenna Fischer add comedic depth, but it's the teens who carry the emotional weight.
