Pergolesi’s L’Olimpiade album review highlights a baroque rarity brought to life with pacy conducting and a fine cast. This 1735 opera, based on Pietro Metastasio’s tale of Olympic Games intrigue, is among the finest settings of this popular libretto, presaging a glorious career cut short by the composer’s death at age 26.
Plot and Performance of Pergolesi’s L’Olimpiade
The story follows Megacle, persuaded to compete in disguise as his friend Licida, unaware the prize is Aristea, the woman he loves. With a cast-off mistress masquerading as a shepherdess and a long-lost twin revelation, the plot is brain-addlingly complex. Giulio Prandi’s two-and-a-half-hour version makes unobtrusive cuts, ensuring the drama flies by.

Conducting and Orchestral Excellence
Prandi’s conducting is ideally pacy, and the Orchestra Ghislieri’s playing is sinewy and tightly sprung. While the recording lacks the sonic depth of Alessandro De Marchi’s 2010 account, it conveys the thrill of live performance, recorded in Teatro Pergolesi, an 18th-century theatre in Jesi, Pergolesi’s hometown, in 2025.
| Aspect | Prandi’s Version | De Marchi’s Version |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 2.5 hours (with cuts) | 4 hours (uncut) |
| Conducting | Pacy, dynamic | More expansive |
| Recording Depth | Less sonic depth | Richer sound |
| Live Feel | Includes stage noise and applause | Studio-like |
Cast Highlights and Vocal Performances
In a fine cast, Carlotta Colombo stands out as a richly rounded Aristea, contrasted with Silvia Frigato’s plaintive Argene. Josè Maria Lo Monaco’s supple mezzo-soprano brings complexity to Licida, while Theodora Raftis is a convincingly boyish Megacle.
