Pinocchio: Unstrung review – the latest entry in the Twisted Childhood Universe turns the beloved wooden puppet into a sick serial killer. Directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, this horror slasher follows the same bad-taste formula as the earlier Winnie the Pooh movies, milking childhood nostalgia for cheap gore and black comedy. If you thought Pinocchio was about becoming a real boy, think again – here he becomes a real monster.
The Plot: Grief, Bullies, and a Murderous Doll
The story opens in the English countryside, where inventor Geppetto (Richard Brake) lives with his preteen grandson James (Cameron Bell) after James lost his parents in an accident. To comfort the boy, Geppetto carves a wooden puppet named Pinocchio and brings him to life – a friend who will never die, unlike James’s recent friend who succumbed to childhood cancer. But this Pinocchio is no sweet puppet. With a malevolent little face and rictus grin, he’s closer to Chucky from the Child’s Play movies than any Disney fantasy.

James initially fears the puppet, but the two bond over juvenile gags – including a scene where Pinocchio learns about anatomy from an encyclopedia and notes Geppetto has missed a vital part. When James sneaks Pinocchio into his school bag, trouble begins. Bullies pick on James, and he mutters, “I wish they were all dead.” Pinocchio takes the wish literally, unleashing a series of grisly kills.
Slasher Cliches and Problematic Moments
The film leans heavily on established slasher tropes: drop-a-dumbbell-on-your-face scenarios, fake-looking gore, and a body count that feels repetitive. Frake-Waterfield aims for black comedy, but the laughs are often at the expense of sensitivity – including a joke about an overweight child puffing on an inhaler. More alarming is a scene where a female schoolkid character is subjected to a slasher moment topless in the shower, with the camera lingering on her silhouette behind the curtain. Such choices raise serious concerns about taste and exploitation.
