Shin Kamen Rider is a 2023 Japanese action film that reimagines the classic 1971 tokusatsu series, blending gritty body horror with superhero spectacle. Directed by Hideaki Anno, known for Neon Genesis Evangelion, this movie follows Takeshi Hongo, a young man transformed into a grasshopper-human hybrid by the evil organization Shocker. The film delivers intense fight sequences and a philosophical look at humanity. This article explores the plot, themes, and why it stands out in modern cinema.
The Genesis of Shin Kamen Rider
Hideaki Anno grew up watching tokusatsu—Japanese live-action shows with practical effects. His Shin trilogy began with Shin Godzilla (2016) and Shin Ultraman (2022), each carrying distinct tones. Shin Kamen Rider sits in the middle: cynical yet hopeful. The film opens with Hongo as a captive of Shocker, undergoing a forced metamorphosis that grants superhuman strength and agility. A defecting agent, Ruriko Midorikawa, frees him, and together they wage war against Shocker's monstrous experiments.
