Something Like Happiness Review: A Tender Look at Autism and Hard 2026

In Something Like Happiness, Tom Newlands delivers a tender take on hard times, anger, and autism, set against the bleak backdrop of a Scottish new town. The novel follows Frazer and Caitlin, emotionally entwined since schooldays, now in their mid-20s and parents to five-year-old Jamie, who has autism. Their grotty flat, adorned with faded posters reading “Happiness, Here,” mirrors the decay of their hopes and the mounting pressure of unemployment and isolation.

A Complex Portrait of Neurodivergence and Rage

Newlands, billed as a “neurodivergent writer,” shifts focus from his vibrant debut Only Here, Only Now to a troubled young man. Frazer is grief-stricken, indecisive, and possibly on the autism spectrum himself, while Caitlin’s hair-trigger fury hints at a traumatic upbringing. The novel’s texture is thinner than its predecessor, leaving readers to infer motivations, but this restraint amplifies the rawness of their struggles.

The Central Conflict: A Punch That Changes Everything

The plot revolves around a vicious row where Caitlin punches Frazer, felling him. This incident becomes a catalyst, forcing Frazer to confront his attachment to Apex Court, the mould-infested block where he grew up, and his refusal to move to a new council house. Caitlin’s mother Janetta schemes to separate him from Jamie, adding another layer of tension.
