Donald Trump is reviving cold war tropes by pushing warnings of a 'communist menace', a strategy rooted in his upbringing and the influence of mentor Roy Cohn. This approach echoes the era of Senator Joe McCarthy and the red scare that defined mid-20th century America.
Historical Context of the Cold War Rhetoric
Winston Churchill's 1946 'iron curtain' speech set the stage for a decades-long struggle between capitalism and Soviet communism. The resulting paranoia led to the execution of convicted spies like Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and widespread witch-hunts. Trump, born months after that speech, absorbed this narrative early in life.

Roy Cohn's Influence on Trump
Roy Cohn, McCarthy's chief counsel, became Trump's mentor in New York real estate. Cohn's aggressive tactics in prosecuting alleged communists shaped Trump's worldview. Harvey Klehr, an Emory University professor, notes that communism was long seen as the major enemy, even if fears sometimes escalated.
