In the 1950s, Argentina released Asian pheasants on Victoria Island in Patagonia, and today these birds dominate the island's forests, raising concerns among scientists. This case of invasive species highlights the unintended consequences of introducing non-native wildlife.

Historical Background: The 'Noah's Ark' Experiment

During the first half of the 20th century, ranchers, hunters, and officials from Argentina's National Parks administration aimed to turn Victoria Island, a short boat ride from Bariloche, into a rare 'Noah's Ark'. They introduced European deer, wild boars, and various exotic trees, including California redwoods. In the 1950s, they also released peacocks, guinea fowl, and five types of pheasants.

The goal was to 'leverage' the island's previous private management and turn it into a tourist attraction with diverse fauna, both native and exotic, while promoting hunting in the region. However, the project soon failed, and by 1959, the station was closed and abandoned.

Current Situation: Pheasants Dominate

Seventy years later, of the seven bird species introduced, only one remains: the pheasant. Between June 2011 and May 2012, a team from CONICET and the National University of Comahue set up eight camera traps on the island, collecting 710 independent records of mammals and terrestrial birds.

Only two of these records corresponded to native species: the chucao and the long-tailed mouse. The rest were fallow deer, red deer, wild boars, American mink, and pheasants. In total, 222 records were of pheasants, indicating their successful establishment and dominance.

Ecological Impact and Concerns

The dominance of invasive pheasants on Victoria Island is a concern for scientists because they can outcompete native species for resources and alter the ecosystem. The presence of other invasive mammals, such as deer and wild boars, further compounds the problem.

Invasive species are a leading cause of biodiversity loss worldwide. On islands, they can be particularly devastating because native species often lack defenses against them. The situation on Victoria Island is a classic example of how good intentions can lead to ecological problems.

What Scientists Are Saying

Researchers from CONICET and the University of Comahue are studying the island's ecosystem to understand the interactions between invasive and native species. They emphasize the need for management strategies to control invasive populations and protect native biodiversity.

The case of Victoria Island serves as a cautionary tale for other regions considering similar introductions. It highlights the importance of rigorous ecological assessments before introducing non-native species.

What to Watch Next

Scientists are monitoring the pheasant population and its impact on native flora and fauna. Future studies may focus on control measures, such as hunting or trapping, to reduce their numbers. Public awareness and education are also crucial to prevent similar mistakes in the future.

  • Invasive species can outcompete native wildlife and disrupt ecosystems.
  • Victoria Island's pheasants are a direct result of a 1950s introduction program.
  • Camera trap studies show pheasants are the most recorded invasive bird on the island.
  • Management strategies are needed to control invasive populations.
  • Public education is key to preventing future introductions.
Species Origin Status on Victoria Island
Pheasant Asia Dominant, established
Red Deer Europe Present
Wild Boar Europe Present
American Mink North America Present
Chucao Native Present, but rare

FAQ

What happened to the pheasants released in the 1950s?

Of the five types of pheasants released, only one species has survived and now dominates the island's forests.

Why are scientists concerned about the pheasants?

Scientists are concerned because invasive pheasants can outcompete native species for food and habitat, potentially disrupting the ecosystem.

What other invasive species are on Victoria Island?

Besides pheasants, the island has invasive deer, wild boars, and American mink, all introduced during the 20th century.

What can be done to control the pheasant population?

Possible control measures include hunting, trapping, and further research to understand their impact on native species.
