UK Wildfires: Inside the Push to Map, Predict and Prevent Spread

UK wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense, and a dedicated push is underway to map, predict, and prevent their spread. From the scorched heathlands of the New Forest to the smouldering valleys of south Wales and burned-out homes in Stourbridge, an extraordinary summer of wildfires has left its mark across Britain. To most of us, these charred landscapes may look like pure devastation, but to a trained wildfire investigator they are full of clues.

Heat-scorched leaves can become frozen in position, preserving evidence of the wind direction as the fire passed through. Soot or staining on rocks, the pattern of fallen grass and bracken, and even how those stems have burned, provide further information about how the fire itself moved. By combining such clues, investigators can work backwards through a fire, progressively narrowing their search to a likely area of origin, then to a smaller patch within it.

“At this point you’re on your hands and knees, looking in great detail,” said Andy Elliott, the UK’s only serving fire officer trained in specialist wildfire origin. “If, for example, somebody has used a match, or if a firework was the cause, the chances are you’ll find it.” Yet, surprisingly few people are trained to read a burnt landscape in this way. While fire crews routinely record a probable cause, a 2023 Forestry Commission report warned that these judgments were generally made by personnel with limited or no specialist training, leaving their accuracy “open to scrutiny”.

The Growing Threat of UK Wildfires

Climate change is making UK wildfires more likely. Hotter, drier summers create the perfect conditions for fires to ignite and spread rapidly. In 2022, the UK experienced a record number of wildfires, with over 44,000 incidents recorded – more than double the previous year. The trend is expected to continue, putting homes, wildlife, and ecosystems at risk.

“We’re seeing a shift in the UK’s fire regime,” said Dr. Rory Hadden, a wildfire expert at the University of Edinburgh. “Fires that were once rare are becoming more common, and they’re burning with greater intensity.”

Mapping the Inferno: Tools and Techniques

To better understand and combat UK wildfires, researchers and fire services are turning to advanced mapping technologies. Satellite imagery, drones, and thermal cameras are being used to track fire spread in real-time. These tools help incident commanders deploy resources more effectively and issue timely evacuations.

“Drones give us a bird’s-eye view of the fire front,” said Sarah Jones, a wildfire analyst at the Met Office. “We can see exactly where the fire is moving and how fast, which is crucial for protecting communities.”

In addition to high-tech tools, traditional methods like fire behaviour models are being refined. These models take into account factors such as wind speed, humidity, and vegetation type to predict how a fire will behave. By combining these models with real-time data, firefighters can stay one step ahead.

Predicting the Path: The Role of Data and AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in wildfire prediction. Machine learning algorithms can analyse vast amounts of data – from weather patterns to historical fire records – to identify areas at high risk. This allows authorities to take preventive measures, such as controlled burns or public awareness campaigns.

“AI can spot patterns that humans might miss,” said Professor Claire Horwell of Durham University. “It’s a game-changer for wildfire management.”

One promising project is the development of a national wildfire risk map, which will provide a daily assessment of fire danger across the UK. The map will be publicly available, helping residents and businesses prepare for potential fires.

Prevention Strategies: Reducing the Risk

Prevention is better than cure, and that’s especially true for wildfires. Land management practices, such as removing dead vegetation and creating firebreaks, can significantly reduce the risk of fires starting and spreading. Public education campaigns are also vital, teaching people how to prevent fires and what to do if one breaks out.

“Most wildfires are started by people, either accidentally or deliberately,” said Andy Elliott. “If we can reduce the number of ignitions, we can reduce the number of fires.”

Local communities are also being encouraged to develop wildfire action plans. These plans outline evacuation routes, communication strategies, and resources needed to respond to a fire. By working together, residents and fire services can minimise the impact of wildfires.

Key Takeaways

  • UK wildfires are increasing due to climate change and land use changes.
  • Advanced mapping and AI are helping predict and track fires.
  • Prevention through land management and education is crucial.
  • Community action plans can save lives and property.

FAQ

What causes UK wildfires?

Most UK wildfires are caused by human activity, either accidentally (e.g., discarded cigarettes, campfires) or deliberately (arson). Natural causes like lightning are rare.

How can I protect my home from wildfires?

Create a defensible space by clearing vegetation around your home, use fire-resistant materials for roofing and siding, and have an evacuation plan in place.

Are UK wildfires getting worse?

Yes, due to climate change and changes in land management, UK wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense. The 2022 season was the worst on record.
