The US-Saudi Arabia nuclear deal is a landmark agreement that would use American technology to establish a civilian nuclear program in the Gulf, but concerns over uranium enrichment have alarmed the Middle East and Washington. The 30-year deal, announced by US energy secretary Chris Wright, aims to meet Saudi Arabia’s growing energy needs while boosting oil exports. Under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s economic plan, nuclear power will free up more oil for international markets. The agreement also seeks to sideline competitors like China and Russia from gaining influence in the kingdom’s nuclear infrastructure.
What is the US-Saudi Nuclear Deal?
The deal, worth tens of billions of dollars, is a continuation of a plan first conceived during the Biden administration. Initially, the US required Saudi Arabia to normalize relations with Israel in exchange for nuclear cooperation. However, the October 7 Hamas attack and the subsequent Gaza war derailed that prospect. The Trump administration has pushed the deal forward without the broader Israel normalization.

Will Saudi Arabia Enrich Uranium on Its Soil?
The agreement reportedly allows for the construction of a uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia, but only after a joint US-Saudi study determines its necessity. The study will run for two years, leaving the final decision to a future US president. This clause has sparked fears of nuclear proliferation in a volatile region.
Comparison: US vs. China/Russia in Saudi Nuclear Development

| Uranium enrichment | Conditional on two-year study | Likely to allow enrichment immediately |
| Geopolitical impact | Strengthens US-Saudi ties | Weakens US influence, boosts rivals |
| Proliferation risk | Mitigated by US oversight | Higher risk, less transparency |
