France and Spain are racing to control devastating wildfires as a fresh heatwave hits both countries, with the UN warning that 'the climate alarm is blaring.' The situation remains critical, with thousands evacuated and firefighters battling blazes under extreme conditions.
Wildfires Rage on France's Atlantic Coast
Nearly 4,000 people were evacuated from tourist sites on France's Atlantic coast as winds and extreme heat jeopardized firefighting efforts west of Bordeaux. The prefect of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Sophie Brocas, said the situation was 'stabilised' but warned that the fight continues. There have been 14 flare-ups, mostly in previously affected areas, and nearly 3,000 firefighters with 23 aircraft are involved in the response.

French interior minister Laurent Nuñez reported that 184 people have been detained since the beginning of the summer, as authorities stress a 'total' commitment to preventing arson and ensuring public safety. The region will face another extreme heat warning starting midday Wednesday, adding to the challenges.
Spain's Battle Against the Blazes
In Spain, local evacuation orders were lifted in some areas, with first residents set to return soon, but tens of thousands remained displaced. The EU has been deploying pooled resources to both affected countries, highlighting the cross-border nature of the crisis.
UN Climate Alarm
The UN's warning that 'the climate alarm is blaring' underscores the growing frequency and intensity of wildfires linked to climate change. This summer's heatwaves have set records, and experts point to a direct correlation between rising temperatures and wildfire risk.
