The Cricket World Cup is set for a major shake-up in 2027, with a fresh format that could double the blockbuster India vs Pakistan clash. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed a 14-team tournament hosted across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, starting October 4, 2027. This revamp aims to add excitement and competitiveness, though it has sparked debate among emerging cricket nations.
Key Format Changes for the 2027 Cricket World Cup
The new structure begins with a “Super Series” among the three lowest-ranked qualifiers, with only one team advancing to the main event. Then, two groups of six teams compete, and the top three from each group—plus the next highest-ranked side—move to a single “Super 7” round-robin phase. This stage will determine the four semi-finalists, leading to the final on November 21, 2027. A total of 57 matches will be played, down from the original plan of two groups of seven due to concerns over dead rubbers.

Potential India vs Pakistan Double
The possibility of two India vs Pakistan matches is a major draw, given it’s the most lucrative fixture in broadcast revenue. The ICC claims the changes provide “greater context, competitiveness, and consequence,” but critics argue the early elimination of two teams after just two games hurts emerging nations. This format shift ensures high-stakes action from the start.
