Athens Suitcase Death: Suspect Admits Hiding Body but Denies 2026

The Athens suitcase death case has taken a new turn as the suspect, 26-year-old Sharif Ahmadzai, admits to hiding the body of Scottish charity worker Elisabeth-Jane Ross but denies murder. Greek authorities are now focusing on the victim's final hours to uncover the motive behind this tragic incident.

Suspect's Confession and Denial

Sharif Ahmadzai, an Afghan national and professional boxer, has confessed to carrying Ross's body to an abandoned building and withdrawing €10,000 from ATMs using her credit cards. However, he maintains his innocence regarding the actual killing, claiming he discovered her lifeless body in an apartment he managed in Exarchia.

Police have CCTV footage of Ahmadzai transporting the body on the night of July 16. They do not believe his denial, and he faces formal charges of intentional homicide. The investigation continues as authorities seek to piece together the events leading to Ross's death.

Background of the Victim and Suspect

Elisabeth-Jane Ross, 38, was a Scottish charity worker with strong religious convictions, similar to Ahmadzai's wife, Alaina Hall. Ross had moved into the apartment on July 10 after arriving from Edinburgh. Ahmadzai and Hall ran a refugee solidarity group called Love Every Nation, which used the same apartment for meetings.

The suspect arrived in Greece as a child refugee a decade ago and later married a US citizen. His ties to the victim and the apartment raise questions about the nature of their relationship and what may have led to the tragic outcome.

Police Investigation and Motive

According to George Kalliakmanis, honorary president of the Athens police officers' association, the homicide division is determined to uncover the motive. The suspect's partial admission and denial have created a complex legal situation, with investigators probing his movements and financial transactions.

Police are also examining Ross's last hours, including her interactions with Ahmadzai and others. The withdrawal of €10,000 from her accounts suggests a possible financial motive, but authorities are exploring all angles, including personal or ideological conflicts.
