The prisoner early release scheme jokes made by ministers Wes Streeting and Shabana Mahmood have ignited a public apology after a hot mic caught their remarks. The incident, captured on video by Guido Fawkes, shows the pair teasing Justice Secretary Alex Norris, with Streeting saying “He wants to let them all out” amid laughter. Both ministers quickly issued apologies, calling the matter “extremely serious,” but victims’ groups have condemned the comments as insensitive.
Background of the Controversy
The government’s early release of prisoners plan aims to alleviate overcrowding in UK jails, a legacy of the previous Conservative administration. However, critics argue it risks public safety, particularly for victims of domestic abuse. The Victims’ Commissioner and Domestic Abuse Commissioner jointly warned that releasing hundreds of offenders could endanger survivors.

In a 2017 quip, former Prime Minister Theresa May joked about Ken Clarke: “When I was home secretary, I used to say: ‘I locked ’em up and he let ’em out’.” Streeting and Mahmood later referenced this as inspiration for their hot mic moment, but acknowledged the inappropriateness of levity on a serious policy issue.
Reactions and Fallout
Victims of crime expressed outrage, accusing the ministers of making “cheap jokes” about a scheme that directly affects them. Social media posts from Streeting and Mahmood apologized for any offense, but many remain unconvinced. The incident has reignited debate over the government’s handling of prison reform and public safety.
