DIY: 50 Years of Hands-On Craftsmanship Embracing Innovation 2026

From “Far da sé n.535 – February/March 2024” by Nicla de Carolis. As Far da sé enters its 50th year, we can’t help but note that despite massive technological evolution in every sector, a certain kind of hands-on skill is now more necessary than ever. Sure, robots are already replacing repetitive manual work—welcome, who doesn’t dream of a little robot clearing the table or stacking boxes in a closet? But I’m talking about the craftsmanship needed to install an electrical or plumbing system, or to create unique objects. In many fields, there’s a rediscovery of these niche productions that can’t compare to industrial ones. And then there’s the manual skill that allows repairs: if we want to move toward a more sustainable world, we must realize we need to throw away less and make things built to last. So, without overdoing self-celebration, we can certainly continue to fully support the validity of this sapiens ability—an intelligent, creative, flexible, and useful manual skill that you, our readers, exemplify in ways that never cease to amaze.

We open this issue with a special feature dedicated to the fantastic world of home improvement and smart home technology—an important step forward aimed at improving quality of life in homes, with automations and technologies that let you manage all devices remotely via the electrical system and Wi-Fi connection. A long way has been traveled since the 1950s when the first multi-control device for real-time system information was created in the United States, already featuring a liquid crystal display. Along with an introduction clarifying all the modes and possibilities of today’s smart home tech, from page 16 there are step-by-step guides for installing intelligent devices where DIY skills, as well as familiarity with screwdrivers and testers, prove very useful.

Smart Home & Automation: Step into the Future

Whether you’re upgrading your lighting to smart bulbs or installing a complete home automation system, the right tools and fixtures make all the difference. For a seamless setup, browse our selection of home improvement essentials—from dimmer switches to smart plugs—and pair them with reliable outdoor lighting for extended control over your property.

Outdoor Living: Create Your Dream Space

Smart tech isn’t just for indoors. Transform your garden or patio with automated irrigation, weatherproof garden supplies, and comfortable outdoor patio furniture. Add a pergola or gazebo for shade, and don’t forget outdoor heating to extend your evenings. For the chef in you, explore BBQ grills and outdoor cooking supplies to make every meal an event.

Repair, Restore, Reimagine: Sustainable DIY

Alongside these smart home miracles, other projects amaze with their ability to recover and give new life to objects through imagination, manual skill, and technique. In this issue, we showcase projects that breathe new life into old furniture. For example, refinishing a vintage dresser can be paired with a modern dresser from our collection, or you can create a custom desk or work surface using reclaimed wood. A fresh coat of paint and new curtains can completely transform a room—check out our wall decor and rugs for finishing touches.

Kitchen & Dining: The Heart of the Home

Updating your kitchen doesn’t have to mean a full renovation. A new kitchen island or cart can add both storage and prep space, while a stylish dining table becomes the centerpiece for family meals. Pair it with comfortable seating and lighting that sets the mood.

Bedroom & Bathroom Retreats

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary. Start with a quality bed and mattress, then add practical nightstands and a mirror to open up the space. In the bathroom, a new bathroom vanity can instantly refresh the look and add storage. Don’t overlook storage benches for extra seating and organization.

Workspace & Storage Solutions

For the dedicated DIYer, an organized workspace is key. Equip your garage or shed with sheds and greenhouses for gardening projects, and set up a home office with office chairs and bookcases and shelving units. For display, consider display shelving and etageres to showcase your creations.
