Building a bookshelf using wall cabinets isn't exactly a new idea, but the one we're proposing in this article has unique features and provides plenty of useful space for storing books and various objects. It's also able to "showcase" your most interesting knick-knacks in internally lit compartments.

To build a bookshelf like this, you need an intelligent assembly that involves using 7 laminate wall cabinets, arranged in a "checkerboard" pattern, inside a frame made of four laminate panels. In the open compartments, glass shelves are placed at mid-height, resting on white-enameled wooden dowels. The cabinet doors, on the other hand, are enameled in a vibrant color (orange in this case) to create a pleasant overall chromatic contrast. The bookshelf is supported by five 85 mm high wooden cylinders, painted white and screwed under the base. To "bring light" to our piece of furniture, we use practical LED spotlights, which are very thin and extremely easy to install thanks to their self-adhesive backing. Simply connect the individual wires to the connector powered by a small low-voltage transformer.
Project for Building the Bookshelf
What You Need to Build a Bookshelf with Wall Cabinets (letters refer to the drawing above)
- 7 wall cabinets (A) 300x370x700 mm with their doors
- 2 laminate shelves (B) 370x22x1700 mm
- 2 laminate shelves (C) 370x22x1544 mm
- 5 solid wood feet Ø 55×85 mm (D)
- 24 wooden dowels (E) Ø 6×30 mm
- 6 glass shelves (F) 295x350x6 mm
- Low-voltage self-adhesive LED spotlights
- Water-based acrylic enamel
- Universal primer
- Screws
- Melamine fiber heat-activated edge banding
Building the Bookshelf… Starting from the Feet
Using a drill press, drill holes in the five support feet. Precision is required because the holes must be through-holes; on the screw head side, you also need to countersink so that the screw sits flush.
Enameling the Doors
Before assembling the structure, it's best to paint the cabinet doors. Apply a coat of universal primer first, then two coats of water-based acrylic enamel in your chosen color. Lightly sand between coats for a smooth finish.
Finishing the Edges
Apply the melamine fiber edge banding to the exposed edges of the laminate panels using a household iron. Trim the excess with a sharp utility knife and file smooth.
Building a Bookshelf with Wall Cabinets: The Internal Compartments
Assemble the frame using the four laminate panels. Position the seven wall cabinets in a checkerboard pattern inside the frame, securing them with screws. The open spaces between cabinets become display niches. Insert wooden dowels at mid-height in these niches to support the glass shelves.
Colored Doors and LED Spotlights
Once the structure is complete, attach the painted doors to the cabinets. Install the self-adhesive LED spotlights inside the display niches and inside the cabinets if desired. Connect all lights to the low-voltage transformer. For more lighting ideas, explore our lighting collection for additional fixtures that can complement your space.
Details in Detail
This bookshelf is not just storage—it's a design statement. The combination of closed cabinets and open glass shelves creates visual interest. The vibrant door colors contrast beautifully with the neutral laminate frame. Consider adding a comfortable sofa nearby to create a cozy reading nook. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use different sized wall cabinets?
Yes, you can adapt the dimensions to fit your space. Just ensure the frame panels are cut accordingly and the checkerboard pattern remains balanced.
What type of glass should I use for the shelves?
Tempered glass is recommended for safety, especially if the bookshelf is in a high-traffic area. The 6 mm thickness specified in the project is adequate for most books and decorative items.
How do I secure the bookshelf to the wall?
For safety, especially with a tall bookshelf, use furniture anchors or L-brackets to secure the top of the frame to wall studs. This prevents tipping.
Can I paint the frame instead of using laminate?
Absolutely. You can use MDF or plywood and paint it to match your decor. Just seal the edges properly to prevent warping. For a complete room makeover, browse our home improvement supplies for paints and tools.
What if I don't have a drill press for the feet?
A hand drill with a guide can work, but take extra care to drill straight. You can also purchase pre-drilled wooden feet from craft stores.
Where can I find the LED spotlights?
Self-adhesive LED strip lights are widely available at hardware stores and online. Look for low-voltage options with a transformer included. For outdoor versions, check our outdoor lighting selection.
Can I add doors to the open compartments later?
Yes, you can install additional wall cabinet doors or custom glass doors to the open niches if you decide you want more enclosed storage.
How do I clean the glass shelves?
Use a standard glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could scratch the glass or damage the wooden dowels.
