Australia warns China that it and neighboring nations will not be bullied by provocative actions, as tensions escalate over China’s rapid military buildup and nuclear arsenal expansion. Foreign Minister Penny Wong delivered this strong message during the 59th ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in the Philippines, calling recent Chinese behavior destabilizing and dangerous.
China’s Nuclear-Capable Missile Test Raises Alarm
In July, China launched a nuclear-capable submarine-launched missile in the South China Sea. Wong criticized the test for providing too little information and notification, stating it comes amid a rapid military buildup without the transparency the region expects. Australia described the test as ‘provocative and destabilizing’.

The timing of China’s long-range missile test—just hours after Australia signed a defense agreement with Fiji—intensified regional condemnation. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed concern over the missile’s long-range capabilities.
