The Divine Playhouse, a newly transformed arts venue in Sydney, is facing eviction after religious groups protested its LGBTQ+ events, sparking a heated debate over free expression and religious beliefs. The venue, located in a deconsecrated 150-year-old church in Sydney's central business district, opened last Wednesday as a safe and inclusive space for artists. However, Catholic men's group Fit for the Kingdom and Christian brotherhood the Prodigal Sons claimed the venue mocks religious faith, leading to a rally and a notice of breach from the landlord.
Background of the Divine Playhouse Controversy
The building, which has not been a church since the 1930s, was previously a children's school and a theatre. The venue originally planned to be called Unholy Playhouse but changed its name after concerns from the Christian community. Despite this, the landlord's notice of breach accused Heaps Gay Events, the organiser, of engaging in offensive trade that insults Christian Australians. The notice gave the venue two days to cease operations, leading to the cancellation of weekend events.

Religious Groups and Public Protests
About 70 supporters rallied outside the venue, demanding the New South Wales government withdraw a $100,000 grant from Create NSW. The protestors argue that the venue's activities are disrespectful, while supporters highlight the need for inclusive spaces. The Divine Playhouse and Heaps Gay Instagram accounts have been taken down due to complaints, and the venue's future remains uncertain.
