Brain injury lawyers are now being sought by hundreds of former rugby players after a dramatic legal shake-up in their long-running litigation against governing bodies. The claimants, who have suffered life-changing head trauma, face potential strikeouts if new counsel cannot resolve compliance issues.
Why Rugby Players Need New Brain Injury Lawyers
The litigation, involving both rugby league and rugby union players, has been thrown into turmoil after solicitor Richard Boardman of Rylands Garth requested to come off the record. Barrister Susan Rodway KC described the situation as a “sword hanging over these players,” noting that some have taken their own lives due to the stress. The solicitors at Leigh Day, already consulting on the case since February, are expected to take over as the players formally terminated Rylands Garth.

The Legal Crisis Explained
Senior Master Cook, the managing judge, criticized Boardman’s handling and ordered disclosure of all medical documents. Failure to comply led to a threat of strikeouts that could remove hundreds of claimants from the proceedings. Rodway appealed for relief, emphasizing that “these are not claims for double glazing gone wrong, but for catastrophic brain injuries.”

| Resources | Limited, struggled with compliance | Large firm with dedicated injury team |
| Expertise | General litigation | Specialist in catastrophic injury |
