Amazon Gold Mining Crisis: Devastation in Indigenous Lands 2026

Illegal gold mining in the Amazon has caused total devastation to Indigenous lands and forests, with recent raids exposing the scale of environmental destruction in Brazil's Sararé territory. The once-thriving illegal settlement of Vila Cururu was recently razed by Brazilian security forces, revealing a scene of depravity and ecological ruin. Indigenous leader Jackson Katitãurlu described the damage: “They wiped out everything. They destroyed nature.” This crisis highlights the urgent need for enforcement and conservation efforts.

The Scale of Amazon Gold Mining Destruction

Since the gold rush began around five years ago, approximately 17.3 square miles (44.8 km²) of forest have been destroyed in Sararé—an area nearly half the size of Manhattan. Between January 2024 and August 2025 alone, 4% of the territory's forests were lost. This intense vandalism surpasses other protected areas in Brazil, making Sararé a focal point of the illegal mining crisis.

Environmental and Social Impact

The mining operations use explosives and heavy machinery to burrow into hillsides, polluting rivers with mercury and destroying biodiversity. Indigenous communities face displacement, violence, and health risks from contaminated water. The Brazilian government, under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has pledged to eradicate illegal mining after years of lax enforcement under the previous administration.
