Xabi Alonso is optimistic he can thrive at Chelsea and avoid the coaching carousel that has plagued the club in recent years. The former Liverpool and Spain midfielder was unveiled as Chelsea's new manager amid high expectations, with the club rolling out the red carpet in the Drake Suite at Stamford Bridge. Alonso, known for his tactical acumen and calm demeanor, faces the challenge of stabilizing a team that finished 10th in the Premier League last season and is without European football for at least a year.
Why Alonso Chose Chelsea Despite the Chaos
Alonso's decision to join Chelsea comes after a turbulent period under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, with the club appointing its sixth permanent manager in four years. The 42-year-old admitted that proper talks were needed to align expectations. He has been given the title of "manager" rather than "head coach," signaling a shift in Chelsea's modern structure. Alonso emphasized that he is working closely with sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, stating they are "aligned" on decisions and goals.

The Pressure of Chelsea's Legacy
Photos of José Mourinho and Antonio Conte holding Premier League trophies adorn the walls of the Drake Suite, serving as a constant reminder of Chelsea's winning history. Alonso's predecessors, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, did not receive such treatment. However, Alonso's decorated playing career—including victories in two European Championships and a World Cup with Spain—gives him the credibility to handle the pressure.
