The Queensland government has released concept plans for the Brisbane Olympic stadium precinct at Victoria Park, but critics dismiss them as a 'fantasy vision' lacking critical infrastructure details. The 2032 Olympic stadium project aims to transform the inner-city parkland into a world-class venue, yet opponents question its feasibility and impact.
Brisbane Olympic Stadium Precinct: Concept Plans Unveiled
The draft precinct plan includes an oval-shaped 63,000-seat stadium, a national aquatic centre, and two pedestrian bridges over the Brisbane inner-city bypass. The government promises to retain two-thirds of Victoria Park as green space, while also expanding the York's Hollow wetland and adding a public amphitheatre.

Premier David Crisafulli describes the project as a 'state-shaping precinct' that will leave a legacy comparable to South Bank after Expo '88. However, local residents and First Nations groups remain concerned about the loss of parkland and damage to culturally significant sites.
Critics Question the 'Fantasy Vision'
Opponents argue that the concept images overlook essential elements like carparks, roads, transport links, and plazas needed for large crowds. They say the plan is unrealistic without detailed infrastructure planning, especially given the site's current underutilisation and historical golf course use.
The heritage-listed parkland, known as Barrambin by traditional owners, has been a controversial choice for the main stadium. The government maintains that the precinct will be more accessible than today, but critics demand more transparency.
