The smartest time to do holiday shopping is in July, when retailers like Macy’s and Best Buy launch Christmas in July sales, offering Black Friday-level discounts months ahead of the peak season. With the high cost of living making gift budgets tight, these early deals let you snag winter boots, electronics, and more at steep markdowns. We’ve vetted the best offers to ensure they’re genuine savings.
Why July Is the New Black Friday for Holiday Shopping
Retailers now treat mid-summer as the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. From Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale to Amazon Prime Day, discounts rival those in November. Shopping early not only locks in lower prices but also reduces last-minute stress. According to a National Retail Federation survey, 43% of shoppers plan to start holiday buying before November, with July emerging as a key month.

What Makes a Deal Worth Your Money?
Not every “doorbuster” is a true bargain. We cross-checked pricing history and editor recommendations to find items that are genuinely discounted. For example, Merrell Thermo Chill Winter Boots (now $89.99, down from $150) are waterproof and rugged, praised by former National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Mirna Valerio. Similarly, the Patagonia Downdrift Women’s Parka (now $219.45, originally $399) offers 600-fill-power recycled down warmth, favored by Anchorage journalist Julia O’Malley.
