Key Controversies During the Tournament
The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, faced several issues. US visa restrictions affected supporters and officials from multiple countries, including Somali referee Omar Artan, who was barred entry despite a valid visa. The Iran team also encountered difficult travel restrictions imposed by the US government.
Additionally, FIFA's decision to suspend a one-match ban for USA striker Folarin Balogun after Donald Trump's intervention drew sharp criticism. Officiating in Argentina's last-16 win over Egypt was also questioned, with Egypt manager Hossam Hassan leading the complaints.
Infantino Defends Officiating and FIFA's Actions
Infantino argued that "potentially mistaken red or yellow cards or subsequent decisions not to ban players in certain situations are routine and widely accepted in some of the biggest leagues worldwide." He called out hypocrisy, noting that countries employing similar practices were among the critics.
The FIFA president's message aimed to reframe the narrative, focusing on the joy experienced by millions of fans. He stated, "We experienced no violence, no incidents, 100% safety and security, only joy and happiness."
