Green Party Membership Surge Could Overtake Labour by 2026 2026

The Green Party may soon overtake Labour's membership figures, as Labour's latest accounts reveal a 20% drop in members, sparking political analysis and debate across the UK.

Labour's Membership Decline: Key Numbers

According to Labour's annual return, membership fell from 333,235 to 264,754 at the end of 2025. That's a loss of over 68,000 members in just one year, representing a 20% decline.

This decline comes amid internal party tensions and policy debates, prompting questions about Labour's grassroots appeal. In contrast, the Green Party has been steadily growing, claiming 230,000 members as of May 2025.

How Close Are the Greens to Overtaking Labour?

The gap between the two parties now stands at just 34,000 members. With current trends, the Greens could surpass Labour within the next 12 to 18 months.

Why Are Members Leaving Labour?

Political analysts point to several factors: dissatisfaction with leadership direction, policy compromises, and a perceived shift away from traditional socialist principles. The rise of Reform UK and the Greens has also fragmented the left-of-centre vote.

Meanwhile, the Green Party has capitalised on environmental urgency and a younger demographic, offering a more radical and grassroots-driven platform.

Impact on UK Politics

If the Greens overtake Labour in membership, it could reshape the political landscape. Membership numbers often translate into campaign funding, volunteer power, and perceived legitimacy.

• Funding: More members mean more donations and membership fees.
• Ground Game: Larger volunteer base for canvassing and get-out-the-vote efforts.
• Media Narrative: Overtaking a major party would be a symbolic victory.
• Policy Influence: Could pressure Labour to adopt greener policies.

What This Means for the Next General Election

With the next election expected by 2029, both parties are positioning themselves. The Green Party aims to win more parliamentary seats, while Labour seeks to regain momentum. This membership shift could be a bellwether for voter sentiment.

Expert Predictions

Political scientists suggest that if Labour continues to lose members at the current rate, the Greens could overtake by late 2026. However, a leadership change or major policy pivot could reverse the trend.
