Haiti gangs are forcing children into a life of brutality, with recruitment tactics that include kidnapping, coercion, and threats of death. The crisis has escalated since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, with armed gangs capturing large swathes of territory and turning to children to replace slain fighters. According to the UN, children now make up half of all gang members in Haiti, a stark warning of an alarming increase in child recruitment.
The Scope of Child Recruitment in Haiti Gangs
Children as young as eight are being targeted by Haiti gangs, often kidnapped from schools or displaced from their homes. Davensky, a 14-year-old orphan, was taken from his classroom at age eight, forced to kill another child as a test, and then compelled to rob, kidnap, and even kill a baby. His story is not unique. Child recruitment by gangs has become systematic, exploiting chronic hunger, displacement, and the closure of thousands of schools.

How Gangs Exploit Vulnerable Children
Gangs use a combination of coercion and manipulation. Some children are given a simple choice: obey or die. Others are drawn in by promises of food or protection after losing parents in massacres. Haiti gangs also publish footage on social media to glorify combat and attract recruits. Diego Da Rin, a Haiti analyst at the International Crisis Group, notes that as gangs expand into rural areas, they rely on children to fill the vacuum left by killed fighters.
