The Pentagon has removed four service members from its official casualty list for the Iran war, sparking controversy over transparency and accuracy. According to a New York Times report, the defense department’s online list of fallen troops now shows only 14 deaths, despite recent fatalities. This article examines the details and implications of this decision.
Pentagon Casualty List Controversy
The Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System website was last updated on Wednesday but still lists only 14 military personnel killed during Operation Epic Fury. A separate Names of Fallen page includes just 13 service members. However, a Pentagon press release on Wednesday confirmed the transfer of remains for four soldiers killed over the weekend, raising questions about why they were excluded.

Three military officials told the Times that the Trump administration decided to remove these four service members because their deaths occurred after President Trump declared a cease-fire in April. The Pentagon disputed this, citing “temporary data disruptions” that would be quickly fixed. As of this writing, no official correction has been made.
Details of the Removal
On Wednesday, the Pentagon website listed 18 American service members killed in the Iran war. By Thursday, that number dropped to 14. The excluded soldiers include three killed last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as Iran retaliated for U.S. strikes, plus a fourth killed during a controlled detonation of an Iranian drone at Erbil airbase in Iraq. The removal has drawn criticism from military families and watchdogs.
