Russia's war on Ukrainian books has escalated with targeted strikes on publishing infrastructure, resulting in incinerated novels and destroyed warehouses. In August, a devastating attack on the Ranok publishing headquarters in Kharkiv highlighted the vulnerability of Ukraine's literary industry. The strike, using advanced Shahed drones, destroyed 628,000 new schoolbooks and caused significant damage to the facility.
The Attack on Ranok Publishing
Viktor Kruglov, co-founder and CEO of Ranok, was at the company's 10,000 sq metre warehouse in Kharkiv when the attack occurred. The facility, built on the site of a former bread factory, held books stacked 12 metres high. "It was the high season of distribution," Kruglov said, "so we were checking all our processes." The meeting, scheduled for 11am, was interrupted by explosions. "Almost simultaneously I saw a huge fire," he recalled. The impact was about 30 metres from the staff, and as they tried to extinguish the flames, a second strike hit. "I understood that there could be a third, and a fourth, so we started to evacuate."

Weapons Used in the Attack
The munitions used were jet-powered Shaheds, a recent escalation in Russian drone technology. These drones are faster and harder to intercept than their predecessors, making them more lethal. Their use against civilian targets like book warehouses underscores the strategic intent to cripple Ukraine's cultural and educational infrastructure.
Impact on Ukraine's Publishing Industry
Ukraine's publishing industry is concentrated in Kharkiv and Kyiv. The destruction of Ranok's warehouse, which held 628,000 schoolbooks, is a severe blow, especially ahead of the school year.
