Steve Davison, a pioneering trade union leader, passed away at 71, leaving a legacy of global worker solidarity and strategic mergers that reshaped the UK labor landscape. His vision created Workers Uniting, the first global union bridging Amicus and the United Steelworkers, and he played a key role in forming Unite, Britain’s largest union. From shop floor activism to high-level negotiations, Davison dedicated his life to empowering workers.
Early Life and Union Activism
Born in Alston, Cumbria, to James and Audrey Davison, Steve studied history and politics at Bradford University before beginning his engineering career at Anderton International. There, he met his wife Diane and quickly rose from shop steward to factory convener. His union activities with the AEU led to an employment blacklist after redundancy in the 1980s—a stark reminder of the era’s anti-union tactics.
