Utah Wildfire Helicopter Crash: Two Onboard, Rescue Efforts 2026

A firefighting helicopter crash in Utah has left two people onboard in a remote area near Richfield, highlighting the extreme dangers of wildland firefighting. The Sikorsky S64 helicopter went down on Friday morning while battling the Widemouth 2 fire, which has scorched over 105,000 acres since July 27. Emergency crews are facing difficult terrain and a new fire started by the crash, complicating rescue efforts.

Details of the Utah Helicopter Crash

The Utah wildfire helicopter crash occurred about 160 miles south of Salt Lake City, in central Utah's rugged landscape. The US Forest Service confirmed the incident but initially withheld information about the passengers' conditions, urging patience while response teams focused on the scene. Tyler Hecht, deputy incident commander, described the terrain as “very difficult” and noted that rescuers had not yet reached the crash site due to the new fire ignited by the impact.

Widemouth 2 Fire and Rescue Challenges

The helicopter was part of a fleet of seven aircraft dropping retardant and water on the Widemouth 2 fire, which was 19% contained with 632 personnel assigned. The crash has forced a tactical pause, with firefighters regrouping before continuing suppression efforts. The new fire sparked by the crash adds another layer of complexity, as crews must now secure the crash area while battling the larger blaze.

Utah is currently experiencing eight large fires that have collectively burned more than 331,000 acres, according to state data. Governor Spencer Cox called the incident a “painful reminder” of the risks wildland firefighters face daily. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation, with NTSB investigators expected to reach Richfield by Saturday evening.
