Adam Goodes Treatment Regret: Longmire's AFL Apology 2026

John Longmire regrets not doing more to support Adam Goodes during the AFL star's final years, calling the treatment he endured "diabolical, almost unforgivable." In his new autobiography, the former Sydney Swans coach reflects on the booing that marred Goodes's career and the leadership lessons he wishes he had embraced.

Longmire's Regret Over Adam Goodes's Treatment

Longmire, who coached the Swans for over a decade, writes that he should have taken more drastic action to stop the relentless booing of Goodes. He admits, "In hindsight, I should have threatened to pull our players off the ground if the booing didn’t stop." This bold statement highlights the severity of the situation and the coach's deep remorse.

The booing began after Goodes called out a 13-year-old Collingwood fan for a racial slur in 2013. Despite immediate condemnation from some, the AFL did not issue an unreserved apology until 2019, four years after Goodes retired. Longmire's regret is a powerful reminder of the cost of inaction.

The Impact of Racism in AFL

Goodes, a two-time Brownlow medallist and Australian of the Year, faced sustained abuse that forced him from the game he loved. Longmire describes the treatment as "extreme," and notes that his proposed response would have been "an extreme act" but necessary to force change. The incident remains a dark chapter in AFL history.

Longmire's reflections are not just about one player or one coach; they are about the collective responsibility of the sporting community. He writes, "I wish everyone had done more," acknowledging that silence and passivity allowed the abuse to continue.
