Brendon McCullum's unexpected role in England's coaching search is creating unique challenges for the ECB. The hunt for a new Test coach is being complicated by the need for the appointee to work alongside McCullum, who was sacked as Test coach earlier this month but remains as white-ball coach. This dual-coach setup has deterred several high-profile candidates who either want full oversight or find the dynamic too unusual.
The Unique Coaching Structure Under McCullum
Unlike traditional setups where a single head coach leads both red- and white-ball teams, England's current model splits responsibilities. The new Test coach will report to Rob Key, managing director of men's cricket, but must collaborate with Brendon McCullum on player availability and scheduling. This arrangement has already caused friction, particularly with next year's packed calendar: the ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia follows closely after the Ashes.

Scheduling Conflicts Create Tension
The 2025-26 season presents a major headache. The Test side will be the focus through the Ashes until early August, but then the white-ball team takes priority for the World Cup. The white-ball coach may demand multi-format players like Harry Brook feature in the five-match ODI series against Pakistan, while the Test coach could insist they play the one-off Test against Bangladesh that starts less than 48 hours later. Rob Key has acknowledged these tensions are slowing the hiring process.
Comparison: Traditional vs. Split-Coach Models
| Factor | Traditional Single Coach | England's Split Model |
|---|---|---|
| Authority | Full control over all formats | Shared authority between Test and white-ball coaches |
| Player Management | Unified messaging | Potential conflicting demands on multi-format players |
| Recruitment Ease | Attracts top candidates seeking autonomy | Deters candidates uncomfortable with shared power |
| Scheduling Flexibility | Coach sets priorities | Negotiation required between coaches |
Key Takeaways From the Recruitment Delay
- Brendon McCullum's continued presence as white-ball coach is deterring candidates who want complete control over the Test team.
- The ECB is prioritizing the best appointment over speed, even if it means no permanent coach for the Pakistan series in August.
- Next year's 87-day gap after September provides time to finalize the hire before the South Africa tour.
- Player split loyalty between formats could create internal friction during the transition period.
FAQ
Why is Brendon McCullum complicating the Test coach search?
McCullum remains as white-ball coach after being removed from the Test role. The new Test coach must work alongside him, which many top candidates find unappealing due to divided authority and scheduling conflicts.
When will England name a new Test coach?
The ECB initially hoped for an appointment before the Pakistan series starting August 19, but now expects the process to extend beyond that date. The 87-day gap after September 13 gives them time to secure the best candidate.
How does the split-coach model affect player availability?
Multi-format players like Harry Brook may face conflicting demands from both coaches. The Test coach might prioritize the Bangladesh Test while the white-ball coach pushes for the ODI series against Pakistan, leading to tough decisions on player workloads.
The ECB remains committed to finding the right leader for England's Test future. With Brendon McCullum still in the picture, the search continues—but the stakes are higher than ever with the Ashes and World Cup looming.
