Manny Feyi-Waboso continues to emerge as a genuine world-beater for England rugby, but the team's persistent discipline problems remain an elephant in the dressing room. After a turbulent July tour that ended with a narrow 31-24 win over Argentina, England fly-half Fin Smith gave the squad a modest seven out of ten, reflecting the frustration of a side that still falls short of its potential.
Feyi-Waboso's Impact on the England Backline
The 21-year-old wing has been one of the few bright spots in a challenging season. His explosive pace, footwork, and finishing ability have made him a constant threat. In the Argentina Test, he scored a crucial try and created several line-breaks, solidifying his reputation as a rising star. Head coach Steve Borthwick has praised his work rate and defensive commitment, but the real test will be whether Feyi-Waboso can maintain this form against top-tier opposition.

The Yellow Card Crisis: A Recurring Nightmare
England’s discipline hit a new low on Saturday. Four more yellow cards pushed their 2024 tally to 14 in just 10 Tests – a shocking statistic that has cost them games and momentum. The latest offences – including a dangerous tackle and a deliberate knock-on – nearly derailed a 19-3 half-time lead. Fin Smith was blunt in his assessment: “We can’t keep giving away penalties and playing with 14 men. It’s not good enough.”
Comparative Discipline Table: England vs. Top Nations (2024)
| Team | Tests Played | Yellow Cards | Win % |
|---|---|---|---|
| England | 10 | 14 | 50% |
| New Zealand | 9 | 3 | 78% |
| South Africa | 8 | 2 | 88% |
| Ireland | 9 | 1 | 89% |
The data highlights how discipline directly impacts results. England’s win rate lags far behind rivals who keep their full complement on the field.
Fin Smith's Honest Assessment
Unlike some coaches who deflect criticism, the young fly-half laid bare the issues. He admitted that England fans deserve better and that the squad should be a “powerhouse in international rugby.” His comments have resonated with supporters who are tired of excuses. Smith’s leadership, both in play and in media, marks a refreshing change.
Key Takeaways from England's July Tour
- Feyi-Waboso is a game-changer – his try-scoring ability is world-class.
- Discipline is the team's Achilles' heel – 14 yellow cards in 10 games is unsustainable.
- Fin Smith speaks truth to power – his honest interviews build trust with fans.
- Back-to-back wins – first time since November, but still five defeats in eight Tests this year.
- Borthwick under pressure – the coach needs to solve the discipline problem quickly.
What's Next for England Rugby?
The autumn internationals will be a critical test. If England can’t reduce their yellow card count, they will struggle against southern hemisphere giants. The squad has talent, but discipline is a mental habit that must be drilled in training. Feyi-Waboso and Smith provide a foundation, but the entire team must raise its standards.
FAQ

Is Manny Feyi-Waboso the solution to England's attacking problems?
Feyi-Waboso brings pace and finishing ability, but he needs consistent service and a disciplined forward pack to shine. He is a key part of the solution, not the whole answer.
What did Fin Smith say about England's performance?
Smith gave the team a rating of seven out of ten, said fans deserve better, and insisted England should be a powerhouse winning every week. He was critical of the yellow card problem.
Can England still win the next Rugby World Cup?
With young talents like Feyi-Waboso and Smith, England have a strong core. But unless they fix discipline and consistency, a World Cup win remains unlikely in the short term.
