The Gaza celebration of Spain's World Cup win has become a powerful symbol of political solidarity, as Palestinians cheered for a team they see as a champion of their rights. Gathered at cafes and outdoor screenings, fans defied risks to wave Spanish flags and honor teenage star Lamine Yamal, who earlier raised a Palestinian flag during Barcelona's La Liga win.
Why Gaza Embraced Spain in the World Cup
For many in Gaza, Spain's victory transcended football. The Spanish government has been among Europe's most vocal critics of Israel's war on Gaza, pushing for stronger EU action on human rights. Saadi al-Masri, captain of the Gaza al-Irada amputee football team, explained: "I support Spain because we see it as a country that stands with the Palestinian cause."

Lamine Yamal's Palestinian Flag Controversy
When Israeli officials attacked Yamal for raising a Palestinian flag, accusing him of "inciting hatred," Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez defended the player. "Lamine has only expressed the solidarity with Palestine that is felt by millions of us in Spain," Sánchez posted. This moment turned Yamal into a hero for many Palestinians.
Political Divide: Spain vs. Argentina
The World Cup final also reflected geopolitical tensions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backed Argentina, led by far-right President Javier Milei, while the Palestinian delegation to the UN posted an image of the Spanish team under the headline "world champions."
| Country | Political Stance | World Cup Support |
|---|---|---|
| Spain | Pro-Palestinian rights, critical of Israel | Celebrated by Gaza |
